2. Caller: Release the PTT button & wait for reaction from the other radio users in the network.
3. Reaction from other radio users in the network:
React by stating your name & street address & saying “standing by”.
4. Caller: State your problem / concern / situation / emergency.
5. Caller: State the response you require e.g. to switch on the outside lights, require presence of closest radio neighbours, alert security company, alert SAPS etc.
6. Reaction from other radio users in the network:
Respond to the emergency as requested by the caller taking into account that you must always put your own safety first.
7. In the event of a life threatening scenario where you don’t have enough time to go through the above mentioned procedures, press the PTT button, state your name, address & emergency. Repeat this as many times you can.
General house rules on using the radios in the security network
1. Always keep your radio close to you – the radio is useless if you can’t reach it in time.
2. Use the radios responsibly & only in the case of an emergency. No “private” chats with your neighbours on the emergency channel (16) please – remember everyone on the network will hear you.
3. Always ensure that your radio is switched on & set on channel 16.
4. Ensure your radio’s volume is set to the highest level (refer to manual).
5. If you are testing the radios follow the procedures as explained above & state clearly that you are testing the radios & ask for response from the network users.
6. Do not allow small children to play with the radios.
7. Teach older responsible children how to use the radios in case of an emergency.
8. Follow the procedure as explained above at all times to ensure that there is discipline & efficient use of the radios in the security network.
9. Display these guidelines next to the place where the radios are kept.
International phonetic alphabet
The Phonetic Alphabet is used by radio operators, to spell out words. It is useful when exchanging important and precise information (addresses, names, etc) especially during unclear transmission.
